How to Migrate

To save time migrating your data we've created a migration tool to help extract your data from Sage 50 and import it into Sage Accounting, Sage Payroll and HR. Move your client data in three easy steps:

Before Migrating

Before migrating, let’s make sure you and your clients are set up in Sage Accounting and/or Sage Payroll and HR.

If you’re migrating to Sage Accounting:

  1. Log in to your Sage Accounting Accountants Edition account. If you haven’t signed up for your free account yet, click here.
  2. Invite your client from your Accountants Edition. Not sure how ? Click here. Once your client is set up, the option to migrate will be presented.

If you’re migrating your client to Sage Payroll and HR, log in to Sage HR. If you haven’t signed up your client's company for a 30-day trial yet, click here.

At this point, you can head on to Step 1

Step 1: Prepare to move

Pick a day for your move that’s the start of a new accounting period. For example, the start of a new month or quarter. If you are migrating to Sage Accounting and reconcile your bank accounts with Sage 50, print your Account Rec. Summary with Outstanding Trans. Detail report – you will need this for your first reconciliation in Sage Accounting.

Step 2: Export your data

When you’re ready, download, install and run the migration tool

If you’re migrating to Sage Accounting, export your company data then upload it into Sage Accounting.

If you’re migrating to Sage Payroll and HR, export your employee data then import it to Sage HR.
Don’t worry, we’ll guide you every step of the way.

Step 3: Import your data

Make sure your data matches in your Post Migration Report, and you’re good to go!

Most customers can move online within an hour*, but it depends on how much data you are moving. The more data you move, the longer it takes.
We know you’re going to love Sage Accounting, but in the off chance you don’t, you can move back to Sage 50. However, you will be required to upgrade to the latest version of Sage 50 to download any data that was entered into Accounting since the move.
Yes! All editions of Sage 50 can be moved to Sage Accounting.

Moving online is easy! All you need is an internet connection, your Sage 50 database and a Windows machine to make the move. Recommended Internet browsers include:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Apple Safari
  • Microsoft Edge

We do not support Internet Explorer. The data file will not upload.

A Mac user? We’ve got you covered! Sage Accounting is compatible with all major web browsers regardless of operating system, including but not limited to:

  • Windows
  • Linux
  • Unix
  • macOS
  • Android
  • iOS
You can use Sage 50 and Sage Accounting, Payroll and HR at the same time, however, this is not a two-way sync. The data entered in Sage 50 will not flow to Sage Accounting, Payroll or HR and vice versa. We recommend only using your online solutions after successful migration.

Moving your data from Sage 50 to Sage Accounting, Payroll and HR is free but maintaining access to Sage Accounting, Payroll and Sage HR requires a monthly subscription. See the “Sage online subscriptions for your clients” section of this page for more information.

At this time, our migration tool only supports migrations to Sage Accounting Plus accounts.
The Sage migration tool only supports the move from Sage 50 to Sage Accounting, HR and Payroll. However, we’ve partnered with the accounting data conversion experts, Movemybooks, so that you can easily move from Quickbooks or Xero to Sage Accounting. Movemybooks will guide you through the process of bringing your historical data with you. We’ll cover the cost for you to migrate up to 2 years data from your old accounting system.
