Editor reviews

From beloved author and commentator Stephen Fry comes a deep and riveting exploration of some of the greatest myths ever told. In Mythos, Fry recounts some of the most compelling stories in mythology — from classic favourites to lesser known myths they definitely didn’t cover in your childhood classroom.

It’s no secret that Stephen Fry is a masterful storyteller: he’s one of the most well-known and beloved writers, actors, comedians and presenters of our time. He takes the performance skills he honed on programs like Fry and Laurie and the authorial chops he mastered writing gems including The Stars' Tennis Balls, Making History, The Hippopotamus, and The Liar to craft this educational, entertaining and electrifying work that makes ancient tales more relevant and exciting than ever.

Summary

Step into another world - of magic, mayhem, monsters and maniacal gods - in Stephen Fry's momentous Sunday Times and Audible best seller, Mythos.

Discover Stephen Fry's magnificent retelling of the greatest myths and legends ever told....

No one loves and quarrels, desires and deceives as boldly or brilliantly as Greek gods and goddesses.

In Stephen Fry's vivid retelling, we gaze in wonder as wise Athena is born from the cracking open of the great head of Zeus and follow doomed Persephone into the dark and lonely realm of the Underworld.

Shiver in fear when Pandora opens her jar of evil torments.

Listen with joy as the legendary love affair between Eros and Psyche unfolds.

Read by Stephen Fry himself, Mythos captures these extraordinary myths for our modern age - in all their dazzling and deeply human relevance.

If you're enthralled by the magic of Greek mythology you'll love Fry's follow-up books Heroes and Troy, with tales of mortals and monsters, quests and adventures.

Very Entertaining.

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. Stephen Fry delivers a masterful narration of stories which everyone should know and love. So much wisdom that is as relevant now as it was then.

Enjoyable

Not quite what I was expecting but I think I might be too used to the later of the myths Jason and the argonauts, Troy, Theseus etc. This telling of the earlier myths was very good.

Kept me entralled

Having just finished the author's wonderful audio version of his book Heroes I immediately downloaded this book to get the his versions of the earlier stories in Greek mythology. Yet again he brings complicated stories to vivid life and what stories they are. These books have really brought home me the great influence of the classical world on our culture. The author slips in all sorts of fascination links between the names of mythological characters and words in modern languages and geographical locations. The author has done a lot of work to gather together the stories and tease out the numerous names, most of which I hadn't heard of, but it didn't matter because the main thrust of the story is always clear.

The main thing is these are great stories made all the more enjoyable and understandable by Stephen Fry's superb delivery.

Engineering fault

Somewhere in the middle of this audio book occurred a mixing mistake. - Stephen fry messes up a sentence and starts over again only for the audio to completely drop out for a few seconds and then start again at a delayed part, leaving out a bit of information (it’s not terrible, only a few seconds) but making this otherwise extraordinary audio book not 100% perfect. Mistakes happen, this is a hefty production but I thought I’d mention it.

Faultless

Marvellous! This book breathes new life into ancient tales which, despite having been told countless times, seem somehow new and as though told for the first time under Fry's skilful narrative. Please try this book.

Enlightening

I was worried about whether I'd enjoy this book or not, I'm not a huge fan of Greek mythology but I found this book hard to put down. I would recommend this to anyone who's interested in history and learning about culture
